Commercial solar installations in the UK have experienced sizable growth. According to data released by the Government, during the last decade the number of commercial solar panel installations has increased by over 300%. Why? Well, there are a number of reasons and policies which point to this growth which include falling costs of solar technology, Government “push” for renewable energy projects which use both “stick and carrot” incentives and increased awareness of the benefits of solar power among businesses. These include helping to secure energy supply and fixing electricity costs via a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA).

The decrease in technology costs for commercial solar installations has been principally driven by the falling cost of solar panels and other components such as inverters. This has made commercial solar power a more cost-effective option for businesses looking to reduce their energy bills. In short, commercial solar installations have become a more attractive for businesses of all sizes to invest in, hence the surge in the number of commercial installations across the country.
We add a note of caution here. When installing a commercial solar array, do not be tempted to cut costs by specifying a cheap inverter. Inverters are the part of the solar jigsaw which does much of the work. We know from the experience of customers which have asked us to rectify their installation, that cheap inverters simply do not last the course. When they go they will disrupt your power supply and you will need to divert time and resources restoring your system rather than getting-on with whatever you do as a business.
Overall, the rapid growth of commercial solar installations in the UK is a promising sign for the country's transition to a renewable energy system. With falling costs, Government “push” and increasing awareness of the benefits of solar power, businesses are increasingly turning to solar energy as a cost-effective alternative to traditional energy sources. As the industry continues to grow, it is likely that commercial solar installations will play an increasingly important role in the UK's energy mix.
